Introduction about Omamori Spa Co-op

Post 08/07/2019

Blind-Link, a social enterprise devoted to supporting the needs of the blind and vision impaired throughout Vietnam, and empowering them to achieve increasing independence and self confidence, has developed a new business model which we have chosen to call the “Spa Co-op”.

This model enables a form of entrepreneurship which helps minimize the risks of total independence while fostering in the individual entrepreneur a sense of personal achievement, allowing him or her to achieve independence one step at a time. It is a hybrid model which takes advantage of the already established location and name brand of the spa, thus eliminating the capital expenditures and overhead necessary to establish a “free-standing” business totally on his or her own. In our model, a chain of spas is established with each Spa Co-op capitalizing on the name and reputation of the mother organization, Omamori Spa. Omamori Spa and its associated Spa Co-ops are in turn supported by Blind-Link which provides support in the form of administration and training.

Entrepreneurship education offers a solution. It seeks to prepare visually impaired trainees to be responsible, enterprising individuals who become entrepreneurs or entrepreneurial thinkers by immersing them in real life learning experiences where they can take risks, manage the results, and learn from the outcomes. Blind-Link has been organizing this kind of Entrepreneurship Education as a part of the two-year comprehensive training courses for our blind students since 2013. A number of our graduate therapists, inspired by the model of Omamori Spa, have set goals to start their own business in the future. At least four of them are already running fully independent hybrid massage parlors and spas on their own in Hanoi alone.

However, our blind entrepreneurs have faced huge challenges in running their own completely independent businesses. Some have even closed their shops after incurring serious losses and have gone into debt. In order to offer better support for blind therapists in pursuing their dream of going into business, this initiative of Omamori Spa to establish the Omamori Spa Co-op has been introduced  as of June 2019. Omamori Co-op is a group of studios providing blind therapists trained by Omamori Spa the opportunity to gain their independence and become self-employed by renting beds within an established spa, thereby empowering them to work on their own but with the marketing and administrative support of a respected organization.

Omamori Spa Co-op targets middle-income clients seeking professional massages at affordable prices. Normally our studios are small or medium size studios in located in desirable areas. They are clean, quiet and cozy, maintaining the standards shared by all Omamori Spas. Though decorated to the same high standards of aesthetic excellence, neither shower/bath services nor private rooms are available thus lowering overhead costs somewhat. The menu will include popular services mostly selected by a typical client such as Omamori (deep tissues and acupressure modality), Swedish, Non-oil treatment, Back or Foot treatment. As with all of our facilities we maintain a strict No Tipping policy. (Doctors and lawyers don’t work for tips, nor do our therapist). You can be assured of the same high standards of service and facility throughout or network of spas and spa co-ops.
